This book is, in a way, still a hot topic today.
Is modern society demarcated along the lines of age? It’s a short, very dark story about genocide against the elderly–the young people of Buenos Aires have decided that seniors don’t contribute to society and should be eliminated.
Mar 02, Abu Alizade rated it it was ok. His characters were vivid, and his descriptions of being old were heartbreaking but sweet at the same time, if that makes any sense. In an unexpected foreshadowing perhaps of the impending Social Security crisis, this is a chilling, strange account of a Buenos Aires that has, without warning, violently turned on its elderly. When, at the beginning of the novel, they witness an older woman enter the bar where they are playing trucothey ask themselves, for instance, what business a woman her age has to go into such a place at such a time.

The theme is worthy and crrdo, young people killing old people for basically screwing up the world, however it is not explored in depth; and worse, the characters are bkoy developed at all. No, Isidro and his cronies are not really very nice people, they are real people instead, and age has not en-nicened them.

It was so sinister it made my skin crawl throughout the entire book. Published October 11th by Plume first published Casares is best known for his collaborations with Borges, and for early work of the philosophic fantastic The Invention of Morelwhich inspired Last Year at Marienbad and the second Brothers Quay feature.
The mere concept is tuerra, and Bioy Casares did a great job of showing the atrocities that normal people are capable of doing when they’re consumed by hatred. An interesting dystopia which tells us about a war bethween the younger people and the old ones. One explanation is that those young terrorists think that old people live too long and deprive them of resources and chances diatio should in due course have fallen to them, but other people take a more sophisticated outlook by surmising that what those young yahoos actually hate about their victims is the melancholy fact that the old remind them of their own eventual fate.
